My Great Grandfather, Parker Duffield Heslington, moved away from West Tanfield and went into Coal Mining in County Durham.
He became a Master Colliery Sinker and sank mines in Germany, visiting Dusseldorf and Dortmund in the 1870's, He died on 24
December 1909 in Crook, Co Durham, aged 82 years.....

Parker Duffield Heslington married Jane THOMPSON (born in Westminster,
London in about 1833) at Bishop Auckland, Co Durham on 29 September 1851, under the name HESLETINE! A month later, they had
their first child, Ann, born in October 1851, followed by Ten other children, only two of whom were boys: Alfred, born
19 September 1856 in New Durham and Edwin born 30 November 1861 Durham and died aged 4 years, in
Staveley, Derbyshire 11 February 1864.

Parker Duffield was a son of Thomas Heslington,
of West Tanfield, who married Jane INGRAM on 28 July 1823. On the 1841 British Census, Thomas is listed as a Beer House Keeper
at the nearby hamlet of Thornborough. On other Census Returns and family Baptism entries at the Parish Church, Thomas' occupation
is shown variously as a farmer, farm labourer, and finally as a coal miner. Thomas and Jane moved to Co Durham where Jane
died on 4 September 1845, Thomas moved to live with family members in Gilesgate, City of Durham, and eventually
died on 13 March 1883 at Butterknowle, near Bishop Auckland, Co Durham...he and his wife had 9 children....

Jane, the wife of Parker Duffield Heslington, died at Lynesack and
Softly, Butterknowle, Co Durham, on 3rd January 1888 and was interred
in Lynesack Parish Churchyard... My Grandmother, Ellen, was with her Mother when she died and
said she saw an Angel at he head of her deathbed...
